Communications Summer Intern (Print/web design)

The SSRC seeks a part-time intern to work in the Communications Department, under the supervision of the Communications Coordinator. This is an excellent opportunity to learn practices in the field of communications, particularly in a nonprofit environment. A work reference will be provided upon completion of this internship.

Description

Founded in 1923, the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, devoted to the advancement of interdisciplinary research in the social sciences. It seeks to bring necessary knowledge to public issues through a wide variety of interdisciplinary workshops and conferences, fellowships and grants, summer training institutes, scholarly exchanges, research consortia and publications. The SSRC seeks a part-time intern to work in the Communications Department, under the supervision of the Communications Coordinator. This is an excellent opportunity to learn practices in the field of communications, particularly in a nonprofit environment. A work reference will be provided upon completion of this internship.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in design, communications, or related field.

  • Interest in international and public affairs a plus.

  • Graduate students preferred, but will consider highly motivated third and fourth year undergrads.

  • Ability to take direction and to work autonomously when necessary.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Fluent in Adobe Creative Suite programs; knowledge of HTML/CSS a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with print products for the Council’s various programs, including posters, brochures, invitations, etc.

  • Designing web products, including HTML emails.

  • Assisting with visuals for the SSRC’s new Web site.

  • Other communications duties depending on interest/need.

Terms, Salary and Benefits

The position will be part-time, approximately 20 hours per week for two months, beginning in mid-June and lasting through mid-August 2009 (specific start and end dates are flexible). A monthly stipend of up to $1,000 will be provided for expenses.
