Fall Intern | African Peacebuilding Network

The Social Science Research Council (SSRC), a not-for-profit organization devoted to the advancement of social science research and scholarship, seeks an intern for the African Peacebuilding Network program (APN). The APN supports independent African research on conflict-affected countries and neighboring regions of the continent and the integration of African knowledge into global policy communities. Description
Activities of the APN will involve research, networking and communications among researchers, practitioners and policy makers largely organized in Africa. The APN seeks an intern to contribute towards specific tasks regarding the organization of the program activities, while gaining relevant research, practical, communications and administrative experience. This internship will require the ability to work at the SSRC Brooklyn Heights office approximately 20 hours per week for the course of approximately three months (August/September through October/November).
Qualifications
• Current undergraduate student or recent graduate in the social sciences or humanities; an interest in Social Science/Humanities, International Relations, Media, Peace studies or other related fields is ideal
• Experience with publicity efforts, including through social networking services
• Proficient with web publishing platforms and internet resources; familiarity with HTML a plus
• Interest in, and knowledge of Africa and/or peace, security and post-conflict development issues
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills with strong attention to detail
• Self-motivated, adaptable, able to work independently, as well as part of a team
• Proficient in MS Office, familiarity with database and web management is desirable
Responsibilities
• Research related to African peacebuilding
• Work closely with program staff to help conceive and implement publicity efforts
• Manage social networking and email campaigns in promotion of noteworthy project developments
• Contribute to the project’s online communications efforts
• Help expand and organize our network of contacts in academia, the media and the public at large
• Copyedit according to standards of Chicago Manual, APA, MLA, etc
• Liaise with partner organizations and networks
• Assist in proposal and report writing and editing
• Assist in the planning of workshops, meetings and outreach activities
• Contribute to the day to day administration and supporting resource mobilization efforts
• Other duties and additional responsibilities and projects as directed, depending upon interest and capacity
Terms, Salary and Benefits
Please note that while this internship is unpaid, there is a stipend for travel and expenses.
