Summer Internship | Editorial
Summary
The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is an independent, nonprofit international research organization founded in 1923. Based in Brooklyn, New York, it mobilizes researchers, policymakers, professionals, activists, and other experts from the private and public sectors to develop innovative approaches to issues of critical social importance. The SSRC seeks a summer intern to work with the Editorial/Publications wing of the Communications Department.
Description
The intern will assist the editorial team in maintaining quality control across a host of SSRC-related webpages. Duties include reviewing and updating text on longstanding program and fellowship pages; proofreading essays, blogs, and opinion pieces on the Council’s various forums; and preparing items for the ssrc.org newsfeed. The Council has a long and distinguished publication history in the social sciences, and the intern will also help organize and track materials in the SSRC’s in-house library. The successful applicant will have an opportunity to learn the basics of proofreading and writing for a general audience, gain familiarity with the editorial standards and expectations of academic publishing, and develop a facility with Microsoft Excel and the editorial tools in Microsoft Word.
The minimum time commitment is three months part-time. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Qualifications
• Current pursuit of an undergraduate degree in communications; journalism; the humanities, including the social sciences; public policy; or international affairs (though undecided students may also apply, as long as they are at least rising sophomores).
• Demonstrated ability in writing and editing, and an interest in refining those skills.
• Basic interest in academic publishing, web publishing, and the intersection of the two.
• Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong academic background.
Responsibilities
• Review and internalize basic SSRC and Chicago Manual of Style editorial guidelines.
• Proofread and sometimes develop text for news items.
• Proofread a range of print and digital publications and communications.
• Develop an Excel spreadsheet of library publications and identify SSRC-related books not represented in the library.
• Assist with the organization of the library.
• Proofread standing SSRC webpages as time allows.
Terms, Salary and Benefits
While this is an unpaid internship, we provide a monthly stipend for travel and expenses.
