Humanitarian Issues, Making Sense of Darfur, Media and Advocacy, Politics:

Spielberg, Beijing, Darfur, and the Olympic Games

posted by admin

This past Wednesday, the Hollywood director Steven Spielberg resigned from his post as artistic director of the Beijing Olympics. His stated aim in doing so was to attract attention to China’s ties with Sudan.

China responded by continuing to distance itself from the issue—an Embassy spokesperson said, "As the Darfur issue is neither an internal issue of China nor is it caused by China, it is completely unreasonable, irresponsible and unfair to link the two as one." [nytimes.com]

It will be interesting to see how this news cycle progresses, and how other parties involved with the Games will make use of all the cameras that will be trained on China this August.
