On April 4-5, the SSRC will co-sponsor a conference at Yale University on Varieties of Secularism in a Secular Age. The conference aims to enrich the debate fostered by the publication of Charles Taylor’s A Secular Age, and will bring together prominent philosophers, political theorists, historians, social scientists, theologians and literary scholars who will from a variety of perspectives reflect on the question: what does it mean to live in a secular age?
Participants will include Courtney Bender, Rajeev Bhargava, Akeel Bilgrami, Jon Butler, José Casanova, William Connolly, Simon During, Nilüfer Göle, Colin Jager, and John Milbank. Their papers will address questions of secularism and religion in relation to politics, identity, subjectivity, agency, time, space, and modernity, with commentary from Seyla Benbabib and Philip Gorski, along with conference organizers Michael Warner, Jonathan VanAntwerpen, and Craig Calhoun. On April 5, Charles Taylor will deliver a keynote address.
The conference is being co-sponsored by the MacMillan Center Initiative on Religion, Politics, and Society, the Department of English, and the Office of the Provost at Yale University. For more details, see the conference website or contact conference coordinator Ateş Altınordu.
