Binnaz Toprak

Binnaz Toprak is a professor and currently Chair of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Bogazici University, Istanbul. She has written extensively, both in Turkish and English, on political Islam in Turkey. Her works include the earlier book, Islam and Political Development in Turkey, Leiden: E.J. Brill, 1981, and two recent articles, "Islam and Democracy in Turkey," Turkish Studies, Vol. 6, No.2, June 2005, 167-186, and "Economic Development versus Cultural Transformation: Projects of Modernity in Japan and Turkey," New Perspectives on Turkey, No. 35, Fall, 2006, 85-128. She has also jointly conducted three recent research projects based on survey research that probed into the attitudes of the Turkish public towards Islam, secularism, and women. The ensuing co-authored books have been published in Turkish. The headscarf controversy

The analysis of the headscarf controversy cannot simply be based on arguments of liberal politics. Rather, it has to be analyzed within its historical context. In Turkey, the headscarf has assumed a symbolic character that refers to different historical memories and different understandings of modernity. For both sides of this conflict, the headscarf is at the center of the debate because the debate is, in its essence, about gender relations.
