Simon Marginson
Simon Marginson is a professor of higher education at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He works on comparative and international higher education in the context of globalization, with current research interests in such areas such as global university rankings, the global strategies of universities, academic creativity, innovation and research policy, and the cross-border mobility of students and scholars. Last year Simon completed a report for OECD on Globalization and higher education (with Marijk van der Wende). His most recent book is Prospects of higher education: Globalization, market competition, public goods and the future of the university.

The last four years have seen the emergence of two systems of global university rankings, conducted by the Shanghai Jiao Tong Institute of Higher Education and the Times Higher Education Supplement. These rankings generate media coverage throughout the world, with one exception, and have begun to exert direct effects in the marketing and development strategies of many individual universities, and in some nations the policies and priorities of government - indicating the growing role of global referencing in higher education.
