GEC Program Areas (1989 – 1998)

The Research on Global Environmental Change (GEC) program executed its program areas through five research consortia / working groups, chaired by one or two committee members.  The following working groups organized many collaborative workshops, conferences, and seminars, and produced numerous publications.

Land-Use/Cover Changes, 1990 - 98
Land-Use/Cover Changes drew upon the themes proposed by the Human Interactions group of the Committee on Global Change of the National Academy of Sciences to investigate the conceptual development of the role of land-use changes as a principal type of human environmental change.

National Implementation of International Accords, 1990 -1998
National Implementation of International Accords explored how participating countries implement and comply with existing international environmental agreements and whether such agreements are likely to be effective.

Social Learning in the Management of Global Environmental Risks & Regional Observatories studied how societies adapt local knowledge to managing environmental risks from ozone depletion, global warming, and acidification.
