"Trip to Mannahatta" with New York Prize Fellow Eric Sanderson
Eric Sanderson, 2008-2009 VAI-SSRC New Prize Fellow and founder of the Wildlife Conversation Society's Mannahatta Project, leads a walking tour of the Flatiron District as it existed in 1609. Dr. Sanderson’s evocative visual mapping of pre-urban Manhattan – known as “Mannahatta” by the Lenni Lenape who lived here – frames the imagined exploration of local pitch pine forests crowning the Sand Hills, a spring running along Fifth Avenue, and the groves of green oak-hickory flaring in mid-fall. Open to all Van Alen Institute Members and Fellows.
