DRC Affinity Group in Kinshasa
Members of the DRC Affinity Group traveled to Kinshasa during the week of 16-21 March 2014, for a series of meetings and workshops with political actors from the Congolese government, civil society and the international community to discuss the electoral process and armed groups.

Research Trip to Muanda (Bas-Congo) in the DRC
Research director Tatiana Carayannis and program associate Aaron Pangburn led a team of local researchers to the coastal town of Muanda in Bas-Congo Province, one of the three JSRP research sites in the western Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), for a series of interviews on public authority. The team used several different methods and engaged with government representatives, civil society, and customary authorities.

Great Lakes Region of Africa (New York)
Members of the DRC Affinity Group, and UN officials took part in a brainstorming with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region of Africa, Mrs. Mary Robinson to discuss current regional issues of concern, particularly land rights and refugees.

Central African Republic (New York)
CPPF held a meeting with UN officials on the Central African Republic (CAR) to analyze roots of the conflict, and possible international responses. Participants looked to past interventions for lessons learned, and thought creatively about what could be done in the short-term for immediate relief to the crisis, with an eye to the longer-term statebuilding needs in CAR. The following day, CPPF experts met with Member States for a briefing on the same issues.

Tatiana Carayannis, CPPF Deputy Director and member of the DRC Affinity Group, participated in a day-long conference on national reforms, security, and regional conflict dynamics in the DRC, hosted by the Royal Institute for International Relations on 10 December 2013, at the Egmont Palace in Brussels, Belgium. Carayannis presented on a panel focused on the regional and international responses to the governance and security challenges in the DRC.

DRC AG Members present RVI Usalama reports at workshop in Kinshasa
DRC Affinity Group member and Director of the Rift Valley Institute’s Usalama Project, Jason Stearns, co-hosted a three-day workshop in Kinshasa to discuss the project’s various research reports on armed groups, their policy considerations and the challenges to demobilization and security sector reform.

North Africa and the Sahel (Tunis)
A meeting with UN officials from HQ in New York and Country Teams of the region focused on local experiences and understandings of the transitions across North Africa in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. Participants discussed regional trends and challenges, as well as how the current structure of international engagement can be more supportive to the transitional regimes moving forward.

Affinity Group Brainstorming with SESG Robinson
Members of the DRC Affinity Group took part in a brainstorming with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region of Africa, Mrs. Mary Robinson, to take stock and discuss the next steps for the continued implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of Congo and the region.
