Bio

Joyce Omwoha is a lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at The Technical University of Kenya. She holds a PhD in media studies from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Her research interests include: media, citizenship and identity, gender studies, media and democracy, health communication, and the analysis of the social media culture in Kenya.
A former APN grantee (IRG 2016), whose research focused on social media as an alternative to the traditional street activism, Joyce is currently working on a paper exploring digital citizenship and how using social media and technology can promote peace and sustainable development. Lately, she is engaged in studying the politics of vulgarity in cyberspheric citizenship participation. This was presented by her Co-Author Caroline Mose at the African Women in Media Conference 2019 held in Nairobi (17th to 25th July 2019). She is also involved in The Palgrave Handbook of African Women’s Studies project, contributing to a chapter exploring social media and feminist e-knowledges in Africa; (expected date of publication October 2019). Joyce Omwoha is a Laureate of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) Democratic Governance Institute 2019, working on a project titled “Open the Servers: The Paradox of Technology in Kenya’s Democratization Process.”
