Fellowships for Research and Training on Bangladesh

Since 1990, the South Asia Program of the SSRC has been conducting an international fellowship competition to promote Bangladesh Studies. The objectives of this program are:

  • to enhance the strength and range of scholarly expertise on Bangladesh,
  • to encourage Bangladeshi graduate students overseas to develop new interdisciplinary understandings of their own society, and
  • to promote scholarship on Bangladesh in the social sciences and humanities.

The grant, which comes from the Ford Foundation's Dhaka office, runs through 2003. The final round of competition, however, was 2001–2002, and fellows for that year were selected in April 2002. Please note: the program is no longer offering fellowship awards.

The fellowships included:

  1. Bangladesh Predissertation Fellowships. These were intended to support short-term (3–4 months) field trips to Bangladesh, and were designed for preliminary dissertation field activities, such as investigating potential research sites and research materials, development of language skills, and establishing local research contacts. Applications were sought from from students enrolled in full-time graduate programs in the social sciences and humanities who were preparing for dissertation research in Bangladesh or Bengal-related studies. At the time of application, the student had to have completed at least one year of graduate study in a program leading to a Ph.D. in the social sciences or humanities. Students had to be enrolled in a North American university.
  2. Bangladesh Dissertation Fellowship Awards were available for 9–15 months of research in Bangladesh. The fellowship was open exclusively to Bangladeshi citizens enrolled in full-time accredited doctoral programs in the social sciences and humanities anywhere outside Bangladesh. Applicants had to have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by the award decision time.
