The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) seeks to appoint one to three postdoctoral research fellows. Each will work at the Council for up to two years conducting research, writing, and helping to organize projects in one or more SSRC priority areas. These include: (a) emergencies, disasters, and response; (b) social factors in environmental change; (c) economic development and social change; (d) migration; (e) democracy, social justice and human rights; (f) religion, secularism, and public affairs; (g) transformations of media and communications; and/or (h) HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. In each case, the Council has both US-focused and international projects and interests. Knowledge of specific contexts in the developing world is also desirable. Applicants should consult the Council’s website at www.ssrc.org to learn more about current agendas.
Research fellows will have opportunities to pursue and publish their own research. In addition, they will collaborate in the organization of workshops and conferences, the development of Council publications, improvement of the Council’s websites and Internet communications, synthesis and reporting of existing knowledge, and formulating new research agendas. It is vital that candidates have strong interests in social science and the public sphere beyond the specific foci of their individual research. This is an unusual opportunity to broaden knowledge and networks and to collaborate with leading researchers in reshaping intellectual fields.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in one of the social sciences or a closely related field and demonstrate capacity for research, interest in interdisciplinary collaboration, and effectiveness as a writer. They may come directly from graduate school or on leave from another position. Academic excellence is essential but experience in relevant nonacademic settings is also valuable. Annual salary will be commensurate with experience. A strong comprehensive benefits package is provided including opportunities for continued research and professional development.
The SSRC is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization devoted to improving the quality of social science research and bringing necessary knowledge to public issues. Founded in 1923, and supported by both private foundations and a range of governments, SSRC has projects on every continent and brings together researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers throughout the world. Its programs are approximately 60% international and 40% focused on the United States. Council activities encourage innovation, build research capacity, and help social scientists engage broader constituencies. Interested applicants should send a detailed letter describing their background and interest in SSRC, their Curriculum Vitae, a relevant publication or other writing sample, and the names of three references. Applications will be reviewed continuously until the positions are filled. The Council has no citizenship requirements for employees and seeks qualified candidates from all national backgrounds.
