Global Security and Cooperation

The SSRC has a long-standing commitment to developing better understanding of problems of global security and cooperation, from work on arms control and nuclear proliferation, to emerging social, political, and religious movements, global public health challenges, and persistent forms of conflict and threats to human security.

From our New York offices, an important program cooperates with UN agencies to provide expert advice on contemporary conflict. The Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum (CPPF) strengthens the knowledge base and analytical capacity of the United Nations system by providing UN staff with systematic channels of access to scholars, experts and practitioners outside the intergovernmental system.

Our program on HIV/AIDS and Social Transformation works with government, non-governmental, and multilateral policy makers, and practitioners to foster policy debates on the global politics of AIDS, and to deal with methodological issues relating to sexual violence and conflict and HIV/AIDS. The program is also helping advance new research agendas relating to gender, conflict and security, HIV/AIDS related care giving, and sexual violence.

The SSRC has supported a number of fellowship programs in the global security and cooperation area, from the International Peace and Security Fellowships in the 1990s to more recent dissertation, post-doctoral and practitioner fellowships.

As new challenges to peace and human security emerge, the SSRC brings new resources and forms of expertise to bear. As SSRC activities evolve, they continue to build and strengthen research capacity in this area—in the U.S. and around the world—and ensure that expert knowledge is put to effective, timely use.
