Topics:
From 2007 to 2012, this project brought together international researchers to examine the extent to which school discipline varies across societies in terms of its application and its relationship to student performance. The project represented the first empirical examination of school discipline from an international comparative perspective. Program Director Richard Arum coordinated the study with eight other social science researchers, who led teams that conducted empirical research on countries strategically chosen for cross-national comparison. They were:
- CANADA: Robert Anderson (University of Toronto)
- CHILE: Florencia Torche (New York University)
- ISRAEL: Yossi Shavit (Tel Aviv University)
- ITALY: Paolo Barbieri (University of Trento)
- JAPAN: Hiroshi Ishida(University of Tokyo)
- KOREA: Hyunjoon Park (University of Pennsylvania)
- THE NETHERLANDS: Herman van de Werhorst (University of Amsterdam)
- RUSSIA: Ted Gerber (University of Wisconsin-Madison)
The researchers recently published their findings in Improving Learning Environments: School Discipline and Student Achievement in Comparative Perspective (2012, Stanford University Press).
