The Standing Committee on Cuban Libraries, which was established by the SSRC's Working Group on Cuba in 2001, has allocated over $390,000 to date in support of capacity-building workshops, conservation and preservation projects, material purchases, and travel grants. As a result, many Cuban libraries and archivists have sharply increased their technical skills and there is greater availability of much-needed conservation supplies. In recent years, the committee has shifted its focus to increasing the capacity of Cuba's cultural institutions to prepare for and respond to natural disasters.
