Internationalization and Inter-Disciplinarity: An Evaluation of Middle East Study Centers

As Phase One of its six-year research project looking at how American universities organize research and instruction on the Middle East, Russia/Eurasia, and South Asia Studies, the SSRC's Producing Knowledge on World Regions Program conducted a study of Middle East Studies (MES) centers on U.S. campuses, with a special focus on the role of these centers in promoting interdisciplinarity and internationalization in the field. The study, which entailed six site visits to leading MES centers across the United States during the 2005-2006 academic year, assesses the relationship between Middle East studies and the fields of political science, sociology, and economics, as well as on the robustness of academic linkages between the Middle Eastern region and U.S. campuses.
