Migration is at historically high levels. The enormous movement of people within and between countries and regions is changing the demographic composition of host and sending areas with profound implications for economic, political, and cultural life. The Social Science Research Council organizes activities to advance understanding and responses to these transformations through comparative and collaborative research and through the engagement of scholars with practitioners, policy makers, and the public.
Since 1994, the Migration Program has sought to strengthen the field of migration studies by training young researchers, providing research fellowship competitions, and organizing interdisciplinary and, increasingly, international conferences and working groups in order to expand networks and share research findings and interpretations. Current Council activities within the Migration Program Area promote training, research, policy, and public debate on five themes:
