Models of Capitalism and Latin American Development, a book edited by Evelyne Huber and published by Penn State University Press, originated in a project by the Joint Committee on Latin American Studies, the Council's prior advisory body on Latin America. The book was further advanced by the current Regional Advisory Panel and was completed in 2001.
This book—contributors to which include a number of scholars linked to the Asian and European Programs at the SSRC—addresses two basic questions:
-
Why are some societies with market economies more able to combine growth and equity than other societies?
-
What can Latin American countries learn from the more or less successful experiences of capitalist development in other parts of the world?
Models of Capitalism and Latin American Development tries to answer these questions by comparing a number of different models of capitalism. The book analyzes the economic and social policies that governments followed in those societies that have had more success combining growth and equity, as well as the configurations of institutions that allowed governments to pursue such policies.
Case studies presented in the book compare the Latin American experience to those of Northeast and Southeast Asia, Western Europe and the United States, with regard to economic, labor market and social policies.
