Essay forum contributors discuss the "Minerva Controversy" under the wise gaze of Glaucus.

The SSRC's Politics of Expertise Program is examining the issues raised by the new Department of Defense initiative to fund social science research. Begun in 2008, the Minerva Controversy project has encompassed roundtable meetings with prominent social scientists from various disciplines as well as an online essay forum. Our goal is to assess the implications of the DOD funding opportunity, identify risks the initiative might pose to social science research and offer advice for structuring the initiative based on historical precedents, current security frameworks, and ongoing concerns expressed by a range of stakeholders.
