Conference on Inter-Asian Connections III: Hong Kong (June 6-8, 2012)
Co-organized and co-sponsored by The Hong Kong Institute for Humanities and the Social Sciences (HKIHSS) at the University of Hong Kong, the National University of Singapore (NUS), and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC).
Inter-Asian Connections III, the third conference in the series, was hosted by the Hong Kong Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong in June 2012. The conference hosted six concurrent workshops, each showcasing innovative research from across the social sciences and related disciplines and exploring new dimensions of the varied connections and continuums that criss-cross the Asian expanse. These individual workshops focused on themes of particular relevance to Asia, reconceptualized as a dynamic and interconnected historical, geographical, and cultural formation stretching from the Middle East through Eurasia and South Asia, to East Asia.
The conference structure and schedule were designed to enable intensive ‘working group’ interactions on specific research themes, as well as broader interactions on topics of mutual interest and concern, allowing for the intersection of research agendas and networking of researchers. The conference included four plenary sessions in addition to the closed workshop sessions and the concluding day of the conference brought all the conference participants together for the public presentation and exchange of research agendas that emerged over the course of the conference deliberations. The plenary sessions included Interpreting Hong Kong, featuring Margaret Ng, Member of the Legislative Council of the HKSAR and Stephen Vines Independent journalist, writer and businessman, Inter-Asia, Then and Now, featuring Finbarr Barry Flood, New York University, Takeshi Hamashita, Sun Yat-sen University and Engseng Ho, Duke University and China in Asia, Then and Now, featuring Helen Siu, Yale University and The University of Hong Kong, Wang Gung-wu, National University of Singapore and Xiang Biao, University of Oxford.
