Political Marketplace

This page contains historical information and is preserved here as a matter of record.

How are political conflicts managed—or mismanaged—in countries with weak state institutions? On the hypothesis that political competition and conflict management can be understood through the framework of a marketplace of loyalties, in which patronage rules, this cross-disciplinary project seeks to develop methods for analyzing and measuring the “political marketplace” in fragile states, as well as the role of violence in the functioning—or malfunctioning—of the marketplace system. A series of seminars and working papers is planned.
