Teaching Islam in Eurasia
This page contains historical information and is preserved here as a matter of record.
This project operated at the SSRC until 2009-04-30.
Islam is taught in a variety of institutional settings throughout the former Soviet Union and across Eurasia--including state and private universities and Islamic institutes, universities, and madrasas (local centers for religious instruction). Yet there is surprisingly little communication and networking between the new Islamic institutions and the established centers of Oriental and Islamic Studies, not to mention with programs in the humanities and social sciences. Through partnerships with individual host institutions throughout Eurasia, the SSRC's Eurasia Program holds regular institutes and training programs for faculty members from the region and beyond, with the purpose of refining existing teaching methods and instructional instructional materials on Islam.
