Hurricane Katrina generated its own perfect storm of analyses about the crisis and what went wrong in the storm's immediate aftermath in terms of the response, or failure to respond. In the belief that the situation required a social science response, the SSRC organized an online forum. We commissioned a variety of essays that addressed the implications of the tragedy beyond "natural disaster," "engineering failures," "cronyism" or other categories of interpretation that we felt did not directly examine the underlying issues—political, social and economic—laid bare by the events surrounding Katrina.
