The Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum is pleased to announce the release of the CPPF Working Papers on Women in Politics series edited by our Associate Director Renata Segura. The third in the series titled Women’s Political Participation in Asia and the Pacific was co-authored by Jacqui True, Nicole George, Sara Niner, and Swati Parashar. The paper examines current patterns of women’s political participation in the four subregions of the Asia-Pacific region (Eastern Asia, South-Eastern Asia, South Asia and the Pacific Islands). It analyzes key enablers and obstacles to women’s equal participation in formal politics and public life, and highlights successful mechanisms for increasing women’s descriptive and substantive representation. In each subregion the existing or prospective impact of “fast track” policies such as gender quotas and temporary special measures are considered together with an assessment of future priorities for the political empowerment of women.
