inauguration of America’s first African American president, leading social
scientists reflect on the challenges President Obama faces, and on what their
disciplines, and social science knowledge, can offer.

- President-elect Obama clearly wasn't seeking the advice of South Asia
experts when he chose the India-born economist Sonal Shah (now an American
citizen) for his 15-member transition team, according to a
group of South Asian studies scholars. In their view, because Shah is closely
identified with Hindu nationalist causes in India, she may not be an
appropriate choice for a position in the administration.

- In commemoration of the sixth anniversary of 9/11, the SSRC has convened five
leading social scientists to comment on how well the United States and other
governments have responded to issues that have arisen in the tragedy's
aftermath, including the rise of Islamic radicalism, threats of violence from
non-state actors, and the tension between civil liberties and the need for
effective law enforcement.
