Mohamed Abdelbagi Gismalla Bakhit has a PhD in anthropology from the University of Bayreuth, Germany. The title of his 2015 thesis is“Identity and Lifestyles Construction in Multi-Ethnic Shantytowns: A Case Study of Al-Baraka Community in Khartoum, Sudan”. He has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, Faculty of Economic and Social Studies at the University of Khartoum up until August 2016. Since February 2017, he is the Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, Faculty of Economic & Social Studies at the University of Khartoum. Dr. Bakhit’s main research interests are identity change, urbanization, forced migration, minority groups, and citizenship. During the last three years, he has been a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Volkswagen Foundation working on a funded research project entitled “Knowledge for Tomorrow: Cooperative Research Projects in Sub-Saharan Africa,” coordinated by the Centre for Interdisciplinary African Studies (ZIAF) at the University of Frankfurt, Germany. His post doctoral project is entitled  “Identity, Nationality, and Citizenship for Southern Sudanese Communities in Khartoum and Juba.” The research project ran from 2015 to 2018.
