2021 Transregional Collaborative Research Grants

The Social Science Research Council is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2021 Transregional Collaborative Research Grants, an initiative of the Transregional Collaboratory on the Indian Ocean. The grants will support seven transregional teams of scholars as they conduct interdisciplinary research projects that illuminate the intersections of social and environmental change in the Indian Ocean region: from linguistic shifts in the midst of climate crises, to the impact of environmental degradation on coastal livelihoods, and more. Grantees’ projects will also propose new models of ethical collaboration in research partnerships and between researchers, practitioners, and local communities. These grants mark the second phase of the Collaboratory’s work and build upon the program’s 2020 Transregional Planning Grants initiative.

The Transregional Collaboratory on the Indian Ocean was established in 2019, with generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon foundation, to facilitate new, interdisciplinary research that deepens understanding of the effects of political, economic, and social processes in contexts of profound climate and environmental change in and across Indian Ocean countries. Drawing together scholars and institutions from across the globe, the Collaboratory also supports the development of new models of international research partnerships, grounded in principles of ethical collaboration and equity in the production and dissemination of knowledge in and about the Global South.
