The Better Urbanism, Infrastructure, and Land-use Decisions (BUILD) Research Network is funding five scholarships to attend the 2026 International Transportation Economics Association (ITEA) Annual School and Conference in Bergamo, Italy.
The ITEA Annual School provides young researchers and practitioners with a high-quality introduction to academic research in transportation economics, including many recent advances in the field. The program consists of lectures and tutorials conducted by some of the most prominent researchers in transportation economics, covering topics such as road pricing, urban public transportation, environmental economics in transportation, cost-benefit analysis, travel time reliability, airline network economics, and empirical methods.
Scholarship recipients will also attend the full ITEA Conference immediately following the school. For more information, visit www.itea2026.com.
What the scholarship covers: Airfare, ground travel, hotel, conference and school registration, and meals not provided by the school or conference.
Eligibility: Applicants must be PhD students at a U.S.-based institution. Students in engineering, public policy, and planning programs are especially welcome.
Application materials:
- A brief letter, no more than two pages, outlining your research interests and how they align with the goals of BUILD. Concrete evidence (such as working papers) is preferred over generic statements. Longer is not necessarily better.
- A CV that includes your name, email address, university, degree program, expected graduation date, and areas of interest.
How to apply: Email the letter and CV as two separate PDFs to jonathan.hall@ua.edu by 31 March 2026. Use the subject line: “ITEA Scholarship Application.”
Post-conference deliverable: Scholarship recipients must submit a short reflection of one to two pages addressing what you learned or found most valuable, how it relates to your current or future research interests, and any suggestions for future BUILD Research Network programming.
For questions about the scholarship, the school, or conference, contact Jonathan Hall at jonathan.hall@ua.edu.
