MMGIP Privacy Policy

We, the Social Science Research Council (“SSRC”, “we”, “our” or “us”), are committed to protecting the privacy and security of those who visit our Sites (as defined below) and those who are eligible for, apply for and/or participate in the Mellon Mays Graduate Initiatives Program (“MMGIP”), which includes the Predoctoral Grants Program and the Mellon Mays Graduate Initiatives.

This Privacy Policy, which explains which information we collect from you and how we use that information, applies to the MMGIP and websites related to the MMGIP (the “Sites”), including those available at: and This Privacy Policy does not apply to your use of any affiliated or unaffiliated third-party sites to which our Sites may link.

This Privacy Policy is effective as of February 1, 2017.

By using our Sites or applying for or participating in the MMGIP, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy, which apply to information we collect from you through the Sites, by telephone, email or mail, or by any other means. If you do not agree to this Privacy Policy, you should not apply for or participate in the MMGIP, use our Sites, or otherwise provide any Personally Identifiable Information (as defined below) to us in connection with the MMGIP.

We may change this Privacy Policy from time to time to address new issues and reflect changes on the Sites, and as the need otherwise arises. All changes to this Privacy Policy will be posted here, and we will post a notice on the Sites to indicate when changes to this Privacy Policy have been made. Your continued application to or participation in the MMGIP or use of our Sites following the notice of changes to this Privacy Policy will mean that you accept those changes. We will not, however, without your consent, use your previously collected Personally Identifiable Information in a manner materially different than represented at the time it was collected. Personally Identifiable Information

As part of your application to or participation in MMGIP and through your use of our Sites, we collect information that you provide which identifies you or can be used to identify or contact you (“Personally Identifiable Information”), which may include, without limitation, your name, address, email address, telephone number, educational history, social security number and user account and password. We use your Personally Identifiable Information to administer the MMGIP, including, without limitation, considering your MMGIP application, communicating with you regarding your MMGIP application or during your MMGIP participation, and making payments and sending tax-related documentation to you in connection with your MMGIP participation. We may also share your name and contact information with other divisions or programs within SSRC to notify you about other SSRC programs and initiatives that may be of interest to you.

Except as set forth in this Privacy Policy, we will not disclose to third parties any Personally Identifiable Information we gather from you on our Sites. We may disclose Personally Identifiable Information to comply with any valid legal process or requirement such as a search warrant, subpoena, statute or court order. We may also disclose your Personally Identifiable Information in special cases when we have reason to believe that disclosing this information is necessary to investigate or respond to a breach or attempted breach of the security of our Sites, or to otherwise identify, contact, or take action against you or someone else who may be causing or threatening injury to or interference with the MMGIP or any of its applicants or participants.

We may disclose your Personally Identifiable Information to The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (the “Foundation”), our partner in funding the MMGIP. The Foundation has committed that it will protect the privacy of your Personally Identifiable Information in a manner consistent with its privacy policy [link to MMUF privacy policy] and will not use or disclose your Personally Identifiable Information except as described in its privacy policy.

We may employ independent contractors, vendors or suppliers (collectively, “Outside Contractors”) to provide specific services related to the MMGIP or our Sites. Access to your Personally Identifiable Information by these Outside Contractors is limited to the information reasonably necessary in order for the Outside Contractors to perform their designated functions for the MMGIP. We also require that these contractors (i) protect the privacy of your Personally Identifiable Information in a manner consistent with this Privacy Policy, and (ii) not use or disclose your Personally Identifiable Information for any purpose other than providing services to support the administration of the MMGIP.

We reserve the right to transfer Personally Identifiable Information to a third party who (1) acquires substantially all of the assets of SSRC by way of a sale of assets or stock, merger or other transaction, or (2) assumes primary responsibility for administering the MMGIP, provided that in either case, such third party agrees to protect the privacy of your Personally Identifiable Information under the terms of this Privacy Policy or one that is substantially no less protective. We will notify users of any such transfer through notice on our Sites and, to the extent practicable, through email.

We may publish information about MMGIP fellows and their MMGIP-supported projects on SSRC’s institutional websites and online fellowship maps and in SSRC’s printed materials. This information may include your name, area of research, publication(s), and photo(s). By participating in the MMGIP, you agree to our publication of such information unless and until otherwise specified. Any MMGIP fellow or applicant who wishes not to appear on SSRC’s institutional websites or in any of SSRC’s printed materials should indicate that preference on an application or otherwise alert the MMGIP staff in writing by mail or email.

Non-Personally Identifiable Information

When you use our Sites, we, or a third party such as Google Analytics may log or track information that does not identify you, such as your IP address, browser, domain information and other access statistics, to analyze trends, administer the Sites, track users’ movements, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. We may share aggregated information with third parties. Aggregated information is not linked to any Personally Identifiable Information.

Our Information Security Practices

We use commercially reasonable security measures to protect your Personally Identifiable Information, including physical security and restrictions on access.
You should be aware that there is always some risk involved in transmitting information over the Internet. Additionally, there is some risk the security measures used to protect your Personally Identifiable Information or the systems on which your Personally Identifiable Information is stored could be circumvented or breached. As a result, although we strive to protect your Personally Identifiable Information, we cannot guarantee the security of any information you transmit to us.

Our Use of Cookies

Our Sites use a technology called “cookies.” A cookie is a collection of information that gets stored on the hard drive of your computer when browsing the Internet. These small bits of information automatically identify your browser to the Sites throughout a visit to the Sites. We use session cookies for login authentication as well as to track and identify you across the Sites’ subdomains for the duration of each visit. These cookies are erased when you close your browser at the end of a session on the Sites. You can adjust your browser settings to restrict or delete cookies, though any changes to such settings may limit or disable certain Site features. The Sites do not use persistent cookies (which are stored until manually deleted), and no Personally Identifiable Information will be stored or transferred via cookies.
