  • 5.Briefing on the Democratic Republic of the Congo

    On 16 June 2017, members of the UVC’s DRC Affinity Group briefed the Office of the Special Adviser of the UN Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide on developments and risks in the Democratic Republic of Congo in advance of the Special Adviser’s trip to the region. This discussion emphasized the importance of history in understanding the tragic recent events in the Kasai provinces, but also stressed that there are number of worrying trends in other provinces that are also worthy of attention.

  • 6.AU – UN Cooperation in Peace Operations

    On 14 June 2017, the UVC, in partnership with the Security Council Report and the World Peace Foundation, co-hosted an event on “AU-UN Cooperation in Peace Operations.” In light of the May 2017 Special Issue of the African Security Review journal, a number of the authors including presented their findings from their articles, including UVC Director, Tatiana Carayannis, who spoke to lessons from the Central African Republic. The meeting also served as an opportunity to discuss the lessons from earlier UN-AU partnerships on security governance.

    On 12 - 13 June 2017, CPPF facilitated an expert brainstorming on the Horn of Africa Region at Greentree Estate in Manhasset, New York. The meeting, held under the Chatham House rule, brought together United Nations policymakers from the Secretariat and the region together with independent experts to discuss evolving regional dynamics and to help the UN think through a regional strategy for the Horn.

  • 15.Tensions between Local and National Dynamics in DRC

    On 11 May 2017, UVC Director Tatiana Carayannis presented during a facilitated discussion on “Tensions between local and national dynamics: dilemmas for international interventions in the DRC” at the UN Secretariat. This was prompted by an editorial debate in the pages of Foreign Affairs between Columbia Professor Séverine Autesserre, and Tatiana and a few colleagues over the nature of conflict in the DRC. The meeting was convened by the Department of Peacekeeping’s Division for Policy, Evaluation and Training, but also brought together representatives from the Civil Affairs Unit in MONUSCO, and many others from the UN various departments, field missions and agencies. The panelists explored the relationship between the local, national and international in the DRC and discussed their implications for MONUSCO’s political and community engagement strategies.
