  • 1.The African Peacebuilding Network Grantee Research Methods Training and the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa Bi-Annual Fellows Joint Virtual Workshop

    The Social Science Research Council’s African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa (Next Gen) programs had their first virtually held joint fellows workshop from August 31st, 2020 to September 3rd, 2020. Before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic that has affected all parts of the world, the joint workshop was originally scheduled to be held in Kampala, Uganda in collaboration with Makerere University.

  • 6.African Studies Association 2019 Annual Meeting

    The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and the Next Generation Social Sciences (Next Gen) in Africa programs of the Social Science Research Council participated in the African Studies Association’s 62nd Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. The APN and Next Gen programs convened a special panel on “Discourses that Make or Mar: Engaging History, Identity and the Narratives of Violence and African Peacebuilding,” featuring the following APN and Next Gen alumni: Samaila Suleiman (IRG 2018 and Next Gen 2012/2013), Sifiso Ndlovu (Next Gen 2015), Chantal Ingabire (IRG 2017), and Edmore Chitukutuku (IRG 2018 and Next Gen 2013/2015). Program Director of the APN and Next Gen, Dr. Cyril Obi, was the chair and Patience Adzande (IRG 2017 and Next Gen 2013/2014) was the co-chair and discussant. Other APN and Next Gen alumni participated in panels and roundtables at ASA 2019.

  • 9.Next Generation African Peacebuilding: New Voices, Perspectives, and Approaches

    Wilton Park, in collaboration with the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and the African Leadership Centre (ALC), organized and hosted a conference on “Next generation African peacebuilding: new voices, new networks and new strategies” in Steyning, England, from April 10-12, 2019. The three-day conference was supported by Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY).

  • 13.African Studies Association 2018 Annual Meeting

    The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) participated in the 61st African Studies Association (ASA) Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia (November 29–December 1, 2018). The APN convened a special panel on “Harnessing Unbounded Social Energies of Farmer-Pastoralist Interactions in Changing Environments for Conflict Transformation in Africa,” which featured four APN alumni: Patience Adzande (IRG 2017), Musa Adam Abdul-Jalil (IRG 2015), Mary Setrana (IRG 2017), and Pamela Khanakwa (IRG 2015). Five other APN alumni participated in panels and roundtables at ASA 2018.

  • 16.APN-NUST Media Training Workshop on Improving Media Coverage of Conflict and Peacebuilding in Southern Africa

    The APN, in partnership with the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), held a two-day regional Media Training Workshop on the theme: “Improving Media Coverage of Conflict and Peacebuilding in Southern Africa.” The workshop, facilitated by APN Alumnus and NUST lecturer Dr. Admire Mare (IRG 2013), is part of a series of media practitioner training workshops organized by the APN, following earlier ones held in West and East Africa. It brought together journalists, media practitioners, and academics from Namibia, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Two additional APN Alumni, Dr. Rose Jaji (IRG 2017) and Dr. Stanley Tsarwe, participated and gave presentations at the workshop, which built on similar workshops organized by the APN in East and West Africa.

    The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) held a three-day training workshop on writing and dissemination for its 2017 cohort of Individual Research Grant (IRG) recipients in Rabat, Morocco from December 11–13. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the African Institute for Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation (AIPECT), an independent Moroccan NGO working to enhance peace pathways in Africa.
