Alternatives to Incarceration in Latin America and the Caribbean
Drug laws and the region’s untenable prison crisis are at the center of the drug policy debate in Latin America and the Caribbean. The incarceration of low-level drug offenders for exceptionally long sentences has left the region’s prisons bursting at the seams; the impact is not only felt by those incarcerated, but also by their families and communities. Cutting edge research by the Colectivo de Estudios Drogas y Derecho (Research Consortium on Drugs and the Law, CEDD) and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) sheds new light on the problem and efforts to address it through alternatives to incarceration. African Peacebuilding Network and Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa National Proposal Writing Workshop
The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa (Next Gen) program held a national proposal writing workshop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Participants were given the opportunity to share their draft projects and research proposals with their peers and several experienced mentors. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the College of Social Sciences, University of Dar es Salaam from December 6th to 7th, 2019. 20 participants benefitted from lectures, roundtables, breakout sessions, and one-on-one sessions with experienced mentors and current and past members of both APN and Next Gen Advisory Boards. Planning Workshop, Beirut
On December 6–7, a planning workshop of the Transregional Collaboratory on the Indian Ocean took place in Beirut, Lebanon, hosted by our partners at the Arab Council for the Social Sciences. The workshop brought together eight regional experts representing institutions across Africa, Asia, the US, and the UK, and the disciplines of history, economics, anthropology, sociology, geography, and political science. Discussions were further informed by generous written contributions from scholars who could not be in attendance.
