SSRC-DFG Workshop: “Political Equality in Unequal Societies”

This workshop, held in Villa Vigoni, Italy, continued the partnership between SSRC’s Anxieties of Democracy program and the Democratic Anxieties project supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Topics included problems of inequality in political involvement and representation; institutional performance, constitutional choice and democratic reforms; and the contexts of specific policy environments that make these challenges particularly visible.

SSRC-IFS Workshop: “The Will of the People”

This workshop, held at Columbia University, is the fourth in a series of convenings organized as part of a collaboration between the SSRC’s Anxieties of Democracy program and our namesake European partner program, Anxieties of Democracy, at the Swedish Institute for Futures Studies. APN 2015 Grantee Workshop II in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The African Peacebuilding Network (APN), in collaboration with the Institute of Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) of Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, held its second training workshop for the program’s 2015 cohort of individual research grantees and residential postdoctoral fellows. The event, which took place December 2–4, 2015, focused on the writing and dissemination of grantees’ and fellows’ project findings. Through a series of presentations and one-on-one interactions with experts in the field of peacebuilding, participants were given practical skills to translate their evidence-based research into high-quality, peer-reviewed publications following their six-month fieldwork and three-month postdoctoral residences, respectively. APN Training Workshop II on Writing and Dissemination

The African Peacebuilding Network (APN), in collaboration with the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Makerere University, held its second training workshop for the program’s 2016 cohort of individual research grantees at the Lake Victoria Serena Resort in Kampala, Uganda, on December 14-16, 2016. The workshop focused on the writing and dissemination of grantees’ research findings following six months of APN-supported field-based research projects. Combining lectures, working group sessions, and one-on-one dialogues with mentors who are also well-published experts in the field of peacebuilding, grantees were able to engage with each other, network, and get constructive feedback on their …

African Peacebuilding Network (APN) Residential Postdoctoral Fellow (2014) Dr. Gbemisola Animasawun presented a seminar at the Institute of African Studies, Columbia University, New York, December 12, 2014. His presentation, titled “The ‘Booboisie,’ Conflict Drivers, and Peacebuilding in Lagos and Accra Informal Economies,” stressed the need for more localized peace research and the setup of early warning mechanisms to deter future conflicts and called upon policymakers and practitioners to better engage with actors of these informal economies. African Peacebuilding Network (APN) 2015 residential postdoctoral fellow Dr. Jeremiah Arowosegbe presented a seminar at the Institute of African Studies (IAS), Columbia University, New York, December 9, 2015. Dr. Arowosegbe’s presentation, titled “Ethnic Minorities and Land Conflicts in Southwestern Nigeria,” discussed the often neglected insecurities caused by land conflict in southwestern Nigeria. The seminar was moderated by Professor Mamadou Diouf, director of IAS and SSRC board of directors chair. Dr. Arowosegbe stressed the importance of identity formation in Nigerian statebuilding, paying special attention to migrant and native populations. Planning Workshop, Beirut

On December 6–7, a planning workshop of the Transregional Collaboratory on the Indian Ocean took place in Beirut, Lebanon, hosted by our partners at the Arab Council for the Social Sciences. The workshop brought together eight regional experts representing institutions across Africa, Asia, the US, and the UK, and the disciplines of history, economics, anthropology, sociology, geography, and political science. Discussions were further informed by generous written contributions from scholars who could not be in attendance. Workshop on the state of Cuban studies in the United States

The workshop on the State of Cubans Studies in the United States, which was organized in collaboration with John Jay College of the City University of New York and Cuba’s Revista Temas convened in Barcelona May 21-22, 2018 prior to the start of LASA. The workshop was a resounding success in accomplishing its stated purpose: to bring together scholars who reside in Cuba with those who reside outside the island for an intensive dialogue on the development of the field of Cuban Studies in the United States. African Peacebuilding Network Grantee Research Methods Training Workshop

The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa (Next Gen) program held a week-long joint workshop in Peduase, Aburi, Ghana for the 2019 cohort of APN Individual Research Grant (IRG) recipients and the 2019 cohort of Next Gen fellows. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the University of Ghana, Legon from June 24—28, 2019. 15 APN Individual Research Grant participants benefited from lectures, working group sessions, and one-on-one dialogues with experienced facilitators, including senior scholars, and current and former APN Advisory Board members.
