Application Process

What is the application and program timeline?

Applications are due, through the application portal, at 11:59 p.m., EST on Wednesday May 17, 2023. Notification of award status will occur in June 2023. Fellowships will provide support for research beginning as early as September 2023.

What does an application consist of?

A completed application consists of an application form, a project proposal (maximum of 3 pages) with additional one-page bibliography, and a CV.

What should the research proposal address?

The project proposal (3 pages maximum) should clearly identify:

  • The inequality-reducing intervention being evaluated
  • The proposed strategy to make causal inferences
  • Potential causal mechanisms
  • Outcomes of interest
  • Description of data
How long can my research proposal be? Does it need to be formatted specifically?

The proposal may be up to 3 pages (single-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman, 1” margins), not including a focused bibliography that can be up to 1 additional page. In the event that a longer document is uploaded, selection committee members will only review the first three pages.

Can I submit photographs or charts with my application?

Yes, but any non-textual material must be included within the three-page limit.

Should I include a budget in the proposal?

No. Do not include a budget in your proposal.

May I submit my application by fax or email?

No. Applications sent by fax or email will not be accepted. Applicants must use the SSRC’s Online Application Portal to supply the necessary information.

Can I have a staff member review a draft of my proposal before submission?

No. For suggestions on proposal writing, we encourage you to consult The Art of Writing Proposals.

How can I find out whether the program has received my application?

An acknowledgement of receipt will be sent automatically via email upon successful submission of the application. If you do not receive an automatic email confirmation within 24 hours of submitting your application, please contact cuf@ssrc.org. Please specify “Lindblom Memorial Fellowship” in the subject line.

If I submit my application before the deadline, can I change it?

No. No alterations will be accepted after the application has been submitted.

Fellowship Awards

When can I begin my Lindblom Memorial Fellowship if I am selected for funding?

Fellowships may begin in September 2023. All 2023 fellows must commence the fellowship by January 2024.

What is the Lindblom Memorial Fellowship amount?

The award amount is $7,500.

What may fellowship funds be used for?

The Lindblom Memorial Fellowship offers an award of $7,500 to support PhD candidates. Funds may be used to address a range of needs such as coverage of direct expenses related to the completion of the dissertation, i.e., research equipment and supplies, research assistance, transcription, and costs for access to publications, archives or proprietary databases. Funds may also be used to subsidize living expenses that would allow for more time to devote to completion of the dissertation.

Do the fellowship awards go directly to the fellows or are they channeled through a university?

This is left to the discretion of the applicant and their home institution and should be based on which option is most favorable given how the applicant would like to utilize the funds. In all cases, the formal grantee will be the individual fellow, and not their home institution. We can issue grant payments through an institution once the institution agrees that a) it will administer the award on the fellow’s behalf and will NOT deduct any overhead expenses or indirect costs (IDC) and b) it will handle all taxability issues and reporting associated with the grant.
