Eligible applicants must be PhD candidates enrolled at a member institution of the SSRC’s College and University Fund for the Social Sciences (See list here). Applicants must have completed all requirements and examinations for the PhD other than the dissertation by the time of application. 

Applicants are expected to be affiliated with a university and progressing toward a PhD and in good standing. They do not need to be paying semester fees.

Applications are due, through the application portal, at 11:59 p.m., EST on Wednesday May 17, 2023. Notification of award status will occur in June 2023. Fellowships will provide support for research beginning as early as September 2023.

A completed application consists of an application form, a project proposal (maximum of 3 pages) with additional one-page bibliography, and a CV.

The project proposal (3 pages maximum) should clearly identify:

• The inequality-reducing intervention being evaluated
• The proposed strategy to make causal inferences
• Potential causal mechanisms
• Outcomes of interest
• Description of data

The proposal may be up to 3 pages (single-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman, 1” margins), not including a focused bibliography that can be up to 1 additional page. In the event that a longer document is uploaded, selection committee members will only review the first three pages.

Fellowships may begin in September 2023. All 2023 fellows must commence the fellowship by January 2024.

The award amount is $7,500.

The Lindblom Memorial Fellowship offers an award of $7,500 to support PhD candidates. Funds may be used to address a range of needs such as coverage of direct expenses related to the completion of the dissertation, i.e., research equipment and supplies, research assistance, transcription, and costs for access to publications, archives or proprietary databases. Funds may also be used to subsidize living expenses that would allow for more time to devote to completion of the dissertation. 

This is left to the discretion of the applicant and their home institution and should be based on which option is most favorable given how the applicant would like to utilize the funds. In all cases, the formal grantee will be the individual fellow, and not their home institution. We can issue grant payments through an institution once the institution agrees that a) it will administer the award on the fellow’s behalf and will NOT deduct any overhead expenses or indirect costs (IDC) and b) it will handle all taxability issues and reporting associated with the grant.
