The Present and Future of Transnational and Global Research

Monday, September 23, 2019
New York University
New York, NY

The 2019 gathering of the College and University Fund for the Social Sciences brought together representatives from the fund’s member institutions to discuss persistent challenges and potential opportunities for the social sciences on their campuses. This year’s conference focused on the present and future of transnational and global research, and featured panel sessions on “Thinking Global AND Local: International Knowledge Production Today,” “Experiments in Global and Transnational Studies: Intellectual and Institutional Innovations,” and “The Internationalization of Higher Education: Peering Into the Future.”

The conference agenda was developed in collaboration with the 2019 planning committee: Dean Rachel Croson (Michigan State), Dean Charles Hale (UC Santa Barbara), Dean Kevin McLaughlin (Brown), Deputy Provost Cybele Raver (NYU), and Vice President Celeste Watkins-Hayes (Northwestern).

Held every other year, the College and University Fund Conference provides a rare opportunity for academic leaders to devote a full day to collectively considering shared, fundamental challenges facing the social sciences. The inaugural conference in 2017 focused on the challenge of securing knowledge in a digital and “post truth” age. The conference was central to the development of the SSRC’s Task Force Report, “To Secure Knowledge: Social Science Partnerships for the Public Good.”

The Social Science Research Council’s College and University Fund for the Social Sciences is a consortium of higher education partners providing annual support to the SSRC to enhance the infrastructure of global social science research, catalyze interdisciplinary and cross-institutional collaborations, and help launch the careers of junior scholars through fellowships, workshops, and mentorship.
