This project seeks to illuminate, in comparative perspective, how Japan and the United States are facing the challenges of applying the technologies and methods of quality improvement in the field of health care. The project is divided into three parts: {l) an analysis of the effects on health care quality of the civil law system, in particular medical malpractice litigation; (2) an exploration of the effects of recent administrative reforms in Japan regarding patients' access to medical information and in medical payment systems, and a comparison with analogous reforms in the U.S.; and (3) an examination of quality control developments within the medical professions of each nation.
