Re-sounding History, Embodying Place: Fado Performance in Lisbon, Portugal

An ethnographic investigation of fado performance in Lisbon will form the focus of my dissertation research during the 2001-02 academic year. Through a socially situated musical and gestural analysis of fado performance and close attention to the discourse surrounding fado, my project investigates how senses of place, history and subjectivity for the Portuguese are articulated, imagined and embodied in relation to neighborhoods, city, nation, region and world. My research engages fado performance in Lisbon as a site in which to examine the process through which performed musical sounds and styles become linked to embodied affects and memories and the means by which these become productive of places; what is the role of musical performance in the production of memory, of locality?
