Beyond the Royal Gaze: Ganda Clans and the Construction of an African Metahistory
In my research I aim to uncover the internal architecture of precolonial Buganda, the largest kingdom in present-day Uganda. The methodology I intend to employ combines dialectological studies with oral traditions, and represents a new way of combining sources to study poorly understood historical periods. I am specifically interested in examining the relationship between clan authorities, royal women, and monarchical power in Buganda from 1650-1850. In so doing, I hope to make a significant contribution to the construction of an African metahistory.
