Transitional Subjects: Mother Russia and Her Children
The purpose of this project is to understand within which interpretative frameworks, narrative schemes and categories of thought personal identification is possible in a situation of post-Soviet transition in Russia. Based mainly on interviews and participant observation in Barnaul (Siberia Russia) and Moscow (Russia), the project will explore how the current war in Chechnya has modified the notion of motherhood – and shaped national identity and gender identity of two generations – the first post-Soviet generation and the generation of their parents.
