Bio

Joseph Kimaru Karanja is an assistant lecturer in the Department of Security and Correctional Sciences, Kenyatta University. He possess a bachelor’s degree in criminology and a Master of Criminology both from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. As a faculty member, Karanja facilitates various units ranging from crime studies, security management, private security, correctional sciences, justice systems, rule of law, peace, justice, and reconciliation both at the university level and disciplined forces training colleges. In terms of consultancy, Karanja has been involved in training needs assessment for disciplined services, module, and curriculum development for correctional institutions and university. He is a PhD student in the Department of Conflict Resolution and International Relations, Kenyatta University. His research examines the implication of popular concepts of justice constructed from the lens of community’s experiences with localized and fragmented justice institutions on advancement of rule of law regulative safeguards within popular Somali customary justice processes (maslaha) of North Eastern Kenya. His career ambition is to pursue scholarship and research on advancement and customization of rule of law values for sustainable peace and development in context characterized by intractable conflicts and civil wars, dysfunctional state institutions, limited statehood, state-civic partnership or mediated states and legal pluralism. Karanja is also involved in community services associated with community policing, dispute resolution, and youth empowerment.
