Paradoxes of a “Defeatist” Imagination: Lebanese Journalistic and Literary Writing Post-1967
My project reconstructs an alternative cultural history of the Arab postcolonial critique of nationalism not punctuated primarily by the Arab Defeat of 1967, by examining two sites of discursive production in a nationally defined context: Lebanese journalistic cultural criticism and novelistic writing post-independence. I trace the mutual transformation of the ideas "home" and ''world" in particular cultural debates by Lebanese cultural journalists from 1940 to the present, and of spatiotemporal constructions of the Lebanese social landscape in novels of the same period. By doing so, I hope to illuminate the cultural signs of an emergent global imagination-its historical roots, political logic, and geographic vision.
