The Politics of Religion: Examining Race, Religion and Nationalism in the United States

The proposed project interrogates what I call the “race-religion-nation nexus,” by focusing on the intersection of whiteness, evangelical Christianity, and nationalism in the United States, in the aftermath of Trump's presidency. Through a multi-method, multi-disciplinary research design, the project will address four research questions (RQs): RQ1: How do religion and race condition evangelical support for Trump and far-right political candidates? RQ2: To what extent is immigration a key issue influencing this support? RQ3: How is immigration understood in racialized terms? RQ4: How do white evangelical leaders discursively unite notions of whiteness, nationalism, and evangelicalism through their use of social media?
