Saving the South: The Southern Social Gospel and the White Middle-Class Quest for Democratic Redemption
This project investigates how a socially-focused religiosity amongst middle-class white Southerners combined with ideals of democracy and civil liberties, to inspire their involvement in a variety of movements over multiple generations. Conjoining archival research, text analysis, social network analysis, and case studies it seeks answers to the following questions: how was this powerful confluence of ideas created and then transmitted across geography, generations, and movements? What were its strengths and limitations? And what lessons can this history provide for those who fight similar battles in the region today?
