Citing Angkor: The 'Cambodian Arts' in the Age of Restoration, 1918-2000

Through a system of training and preserving, certain places and objects are being designated 'sites of the past' that are then to be conserved and presented to those living in the 'places of the present'. The "culturally motivated", we are told, will come from "Europe, Japan, North America, New Zealand and Australia" while the sites that they will visit are found in places like Cambodia. The fieldwork for which I am requesting funding seeks to describe and historicize this global ordering of culture through an analysis of the newly established World Heritage Site of Angkor.
