Politics at Work: Elites, Labor and Agrarian Modernization in Guatemala, 1980-2000

This project looks at the intersection of global shifts in agro-food markets, and local labor struggles in Guatemala, to explain the reorganization of work in the Guatemalan sugar industry. Through a multi-layered analysis that focuses on national agrarian politics and especially on the ways that migrant households are being reincorporated into the agro-export economy, the study will contribute to the literature on agrarian restructuring, and to labor process studies, by emphasizing the connections among work-place change, patterns of social reproduction and labor market dynamics.
