Remembering Loss: The Global Movement of Korean Adoptees

This research project focuses on the identity and community construction of adult overseas adopted Koreans through an examination of adoptee social practices and narratives. I ask how adoptees contend with dominant discourses of biology, culture, kinship, and belonging in the U.S. and in Korea, and ask how these negotiations influence the contemporary construction of a collective, global Korean adoptee identity. A key consideration of my research is the symbolic and actual relationship between adoptees and Korea, as place, memory, culture, and nation-state.
