Liberalism During the Transformation of the Swiss State 1789-1848
My dissertation examines contentious politics in the Swiss cantons of Zurich, Pays de Vaud and Schwyz from 1789 until 1848 in order to investigate how communal and individual liberalism interact within Switzerland and how this interaction, involving both struggle and cooperation, not only affected the transformation of the Swiss state, but placed Switzerland within the mainstream of the evolution of European liberalism.
