Bio

Gideon Van Riet is a senior lecturer in Political Studies at North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus in South Africa. He holds a DLitt et Phil degree in political studies from the University of Johannesburg. Dr Van Riet maintains a research focus in critical security studies. His recent research draws on all of the different ‘schools’ within this field and a variety of other theoretical perspectives, including theories of hegemony, peace studies and post-structuralism. These have been applied to the fields of disaster management and the problem of crime and the response thereto in South Africa. He has published various peer-reviewed journal articles, and his first book entitled The Institutionalization of Disaster Risk Reduction: South Africa and Neoliberal Governmentality, was published by Routledge in late 2016. Gideon van Riet was the founding managing editor of the peer-reviewed journal, Jàmbá: Journal of Disaster Risk Studies, from 2006 to 2009. He is the guest editor (with Andreas Langenohl, Justus Liebig University) of a special edition of Politikon: The South African Journal of Political Studies on security infrastructures (2020).
