Taking the Plunge: The Market and Reconstruction of Intellectual Identities in Contemporary China
My proposed research is an ethnographic study of the relationship between the expansion of the market and changing intellectual identities in contemporary China. Focusing on the institutional and ideological aspects of the controversial phenomenon Xiahai ("plunging into the sea of the market"), my project will explore the relationships between the construction of intellectual identities, the development of market capitalism, and the ideological restructuring of the party-state in China's post-socialist transformation.
